BISHOP NEWS | DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION | 2026 — Bishop, Inyo County, California.
Summer 2026 brought visible work along U.S. 395 through Bishop, where Caltrans is rebuilding roadway pavement and improving crossings, sidewalks and drainage in multiple downtown work areas. The state’s Bishop Pavement Project involves more than simply putting down new asphalt: several locations include pedestrian improvements and stormwater infrastructure that residents encounter every day.
Where crews were working in June
Caltrans announced June 12 that grinding and paving operations would begin the evening of June 14 on U.S. 395 between Barlow Lane and Wye Road, initially working outside travel lanes. The agency described resurfacing from Barlow Lane to Jay Street during the summer using more than 18,000 tons of asphalt, with much of the work performed at night.
Line Street closure in July
A separate July 13 state notice announced that West Line Street’s connection with U.S. 395 would close beginning July 20 for up to 10 days. Crews were to replace drainage infrastructure, install new traffic poles and construct pedestrian curbs. The City of Bishop also planned water-line replacement immediately before the highway intersection work. These were specific July construction windows and should not be interpreted as active October detours without checking updated notices.
Sidewalks, accessible crossings and biking
The public project page identifies work on portions of Line Street, Lagoon Street, Church Street, Elm Street and adjacent U.S. 395 blocks. Several areas involve accessible curb ramps and drainage. A shared-use path for people walking or cycling between See Vee Lane and the fairgrounds is another part of the effort. Updated striping on State Route 168 West is also intended to add bicycle facilities.
Completion needs confirmation by segment
Caltrans documents report some sections completed in spring 2026, while others started in June or had July target dates. Work-area dates have changed over the course of the program and are subject to construction conditions. Residents should confirm whether a particular intersection or sidewalk section was accepted rather than assuming the entire project finished on the earliest advertised date.
Cost and local significance
According to the Caltrans project summary, the funding includes $2.4 million under Senate Bill 1, $18.4 million in federal funds and $4.1 million from other state sources. Improving this busy corridor can benefit downtown access, nearby businesses and regional drivers, but evaluating the outcome requires final project records and community feedback.
