BISHOP, INYO COUNTY — October 22, 2026. Motorists crossing Bishop next week should be prepared for a combination of street paving, striping and electrical work. Caltrans District 9’s October 22 bulletin says the Bishop Pavement Project will continue during October 26–30 on U.S. Highway 395 and State Route 168 West (West Line Street).
Reduced speed, daytime and overnight work
The agency lists a 25-mph work-zone speed limit from Jay Street to Wye Road. Intermittent lane and intersection closures may occur by day and overnight as crews perform electrical work, grind new pavement smooth and apply permanent striping. Listed regular construction hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with some overnight activities separately noted.
Caltrans warns that drivers could experience brief delays, but the advisory does not say the whole of U.S. 395 through Bishop will be shut down. Driveways and business access should be evaluated according to posted signs for the precise block involved, not a generalized social media claim.
Why a reduced limit is significant
Temporary 25-mph controls matter even on familiar routes: the construction area includes city intersections used by local trips, trucks and travelers traveling between the Eastern Sierra communities. Fresh striping and surface preparation can change traffic patterns over successive days. Allow time for flaggers and watch for workers in or next to the road.
This project should not be confused with Caltrans’ new U.S. 6 and Wye Road temporary roundabout announced for the same week; while both affect Bishop travel, the locations and types of work are distinct.
Funding and transparency
Caltrans states the Bishop Pavement Project received $18.36 million through federal IIJA/Bipartisan Infrastructure Law support and $2.4 million through California’s SB 1. These are project funding figures, not costs of a new activity taking place on October 26 alone. Drivers seeking exact live lane status should consult QuickMap.
Official source and conditions
This report is based on the Caltrans District 9 weekly traffic advisory published October 22, 2026, for work planned October 26–30. A listed construction schedule is not proof that a road is presently closed. Caltrans warns work may change because of weather, incidents or equipment. For travel immediately before departure, consult Caltrans QuickMap and posted work-zone signs. Motorists should slow down and move over for crews where safe.
